Prof. Dr. Birgit Scheppat
Professor at Hochschule RheinMain
Prof. Dr. Birgit Scheppat is a Professor of Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology at Hochschule RheinMain (University of Applied Sciences), where she leads both teaching and applied research in hydrogen production, storage and usage. She also heads the Hydrogen Technology and Energy Storage Laboratory on the Rüsselsheim campus, working closely with industry partners and supporting systemic innovation in energy storage. Before taking her current academic role, she gained more than 20 years of research experience in renewable energy systems, transitioning from laboratory-scale experiments to real-world application. Her expertise spans the design of fuel-cell systems, high-pressure and metal-hydride hydrogen storage, and the development of hydrogen sensors. She has collaborated with industry in projects such as “cleanEngine,” which optimizes fuel cell system operation, and the “Energiepark Mainz” power-to-gas facility. Among her key achievements, Prof. Scheppat was instrumental in founding the interdisciplinary AZARE Research Center at Hochschule RheinMain, which researches renewable energy solutions for decarbonizing transport, buildings and industry. She also oversaw a pioneering laboratory-scale and applied deployment of modular batteries and hydrogen storage technologies, contributing to both academic knowledge and practical infrastructure.
