Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Nigeria
Ambassador Annett Günther is the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Nigeria, based in Abuja. In this role, she represents Germany’s political, economic and diplomatic interests in Nigeria, and works to deepen bilateral cooperation across areas such as trade, energy, migration and climate. Before her posting in Nigeria, Ambassador Günther had a long career in the German diplomatic service. She has served in New Zealand, Uzbekistan and Kenya, and held senior roles within the German Federal Foreign Office, including as Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and for Migration. She studied English and Iranian Studies at Humboldt University in Berlin, and holds significant experience in political affairs, security policy and development cooperation. Among her notable achievements in Nigeria, Ambassador Günther has overseen a remarkable boost in bilateral trade, with reported German–Nigerian trade volumes reaching €3 billion. She has also championed Germany’s green hydrogen cooperation with Nigeria, leading technical diplomacy dialogues to expand hydrogen infrastructure and capacity. Her public diplomacy further reinforces strong people-to-people ties, and she is a vocal advocate for legal migration, economic inclusion and youth development.
