Dr. Iniobong Abiola Awe

Dr. Iniobong Abiola Awe is the Director of the Department of Climate Change (DCC) at the Federal Ministry of Environment, Nigeria, where she leads the country’s climate policy development, national reporting to the UNFCCC, and implementation of Nigeria’s obligations under the Paris Agreement. Her portfolio includes coordinating climate governance, stakeholder engagement, capacity building, and the formulation of climate finance and low-carbon development strategies. Prior to this role, Dr. Abiola Awe built her career in environmental science and sustainable development, with more than 20 years of experience working across government, NGOs, the private sector, and international organizations. She holds a PhD in Environmental Sciences (Climate Change Policy), a Master’s in Environmental Management, and degrees in Biological Sciences (Zoology), giving her both technical and policy expertise to navigate Nigeria’s climate challenges. Among her significant achievements, Dr. Abiola Awe has overseen the development of Nigeria’s National Adaptation Plan, contributed to national greenhouse gas inventory cycles, and represented Nigeria at major international climate negotiations. She was instrumental in launching a climate education manual for Nigerian schools, promoting climate literacy among young people.
