Dr. Hans Koeppel
Head of Unit, Foreign Policy Aspects of the Energy Transition.
Dr. Hans Koeppel serves as Head of Unit for Foreign Policy Aspects of the Energy Transition at the German Federal Foreign Office. In this capacity, he leads the formulation and implementation of Germany’s international diplomacy relating to the global shift to renewable energy, energy efficiency and clean energy technology. His portfolio encompasses coordinating with multilateral organizations, engaging foreign governments and industry stakeholders, and ensuring that Germany’s energy-transition agenda is integrated into its broader foreign-policy framework, trade and development cooperation. Prior to his tenure in this unit, Mr. Koeppel built extensive diplomatic experience in various postings. He has served as Deputy Head of Mission at German embassies in countries such as Tanzania, where he engaged on development, governance and education issues. He also oversaw senior operational responsibilities in Germany’s Foreign Service, leveraging his background in political science and administration to advance Germany’s foreign policy in energy and non-proliferation fields. During his time leading Germany’s foreign-policy driver for the energy transition, Mr. Koeppel has helped elevate Germany’s role in shaping global energy-transition dialogue, linking renewable-energy deployment with foreign-policy themes such as trade, climate protection and supply-chain resilience. His work has contributed to Germany’s international reputation as a partner in clean-energy cooperation, and he has been featured in “Who is Who” presentations of the German energy transition and global policy outreach.
