Balarabe Abbas Lawal

Honourable Minister of Environment, Nigeria

Balarabe Abbas Lawal is the Honorable Minister of Environment for the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a position he assumed on 9 October 2023 under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration. In his capacity as Environment Minister, he leads the country’s policy direction and institutional coordination on environmental protection, climate action, land restoration, biodiversity conservation, clean-economy transition and sustainable natural-resource management. As head of the ministry, he oversees Nigeria’s engagements domestically and internationally in environmental diplomacy, including representation at major global forums and partnerships with development agencies and private-sector actors. Prior to his ministerial appointment, Lawal brought decades of public service experience to the role. He holds a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Political Science from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. His career has included serving as Secretary to the Government of Kaduna State from 2015 to 2023, and earlier various senior roles in the federal government including Special Assistant positions in the Ministries of Education and Defense, and Chief of Staff to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. His prior work across state and federal levels has built a strong administrative, policy-coordination and governance grounding for his ministerial leadership. Under his leadership as Environment Minister, Lawal has already delivered tangible progress and recognition. His portfolio includes the nationwide distribution of tree seedlings, land-restoration initiatives like the Agro Climatic Resilience in Semi Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project which targets hundreds of thousands of hectares, and accelerated action on the cleanup of oil-impacted areas such as Ogoniland. He was awarded “Environmental Impact Person of the Year 2024” by Leadership Newspaper in recognition of his commitment to pollution control, ecosystem restoration and climate resilience. These accomplishments reflect his drive to align environmental stewardship with national economic growth and security.
