Dr. Markus Wagner

Country Director for GIZ Nigeria & ECOWAS

Dr. Markus Wagner is the Country Director for GIZ Nigeria & ECOWAS, where he oversees German development cooperation efforts across Nigeria and the West African region. In this role, he provides strategic leadership to a portfolio of projects focused on sustainable economic development, private sector competitiveness, climate and energy transition, governance, peace and security, and regional integration. He works closely with national institutions, international partners, and the ECOWAS Commission to align development initiatives with regional priorities and drive long-term impact. Prior to his appointment in Nigeria, Dr. Wagner held various senior leadership and advisory positions within GIZ in Africa and other regions, contributing to large-scale programs in economic cooperation, institutional capacity strengthening, renewable energy, and social development. His work has included supporting policy reforms, advising high-level government partners, and leading multi-country teams in the implementation of development projects designed to promote stability, growth, and inclusive participation. Under his leadership, GIZ Nigeria & ECOWAS has expanded its program portfolio and strengthened partnerships focused on sustainable growth, energy transition, climate resilience, regional trade, and peacebuilding. Dr. Wagner continues to champion collaborative approaches that empower local institutions, increase private sector participation, and enhance regional cooperation. His strategic direction reflects a strong commitment to fostering resilient societies and advancing inclusive development across West Africa.
